Love it—but one design flaw. Make that two...

This tent is doing everything we wanted it to do--and then some. We already had Napier's "Cove" attachment which we liked a lot, and saw that it was good quality so we were confident ordering another of their products. We wanted a more all purpose add-on, and this was better than expected. We mostly wanted a place to stand up when camping in our Sienna. We can now climb out of the bed in the van and have a place to get dressed, etc. What we didn't expect? It's big: With the windows unzipped, it makes a great screen house if the bugs are bad. We brought our folding chairs inside and spent a dry, cozy evening while it thunderstormed. I put some mats down so the chair legs wouldn't scuff the floor. Plenty of overhead space so we felt comfortable setting up the stove and making coffee. No more setting up a tarp over the picnic table. The Dream.Downsides? It's big and heavy. The poles are thick fiberglass with big ferrules which snag on the tent sleeves making set up a bit more difficult. With only two poles, setup is simple, but they're really long and flexy and it takes a bit of doing to get that big dome to stand up (and we've been tent campers for years). It's gotten easier the more we do it. Once the poles are up, the rest of setup is really quick. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to lighter, sleeker poles.A person could probably get it to fit back into the carrier bag, but it would take time and practice. We're car camping, not ultralight backpacking, so we roll it with the included straps and throw it into the car. We might use an old big duffel next time. The tent stakes are like railroad spikes. I've never seen heavier ones. Another upgrade in the cards? The main design flaw we noticed in that thunderstorm. The seam at the edge of the floor makes a natural gutter for rain to catch in and the seam isn't sealed, so we saw some pretty good leaking all around. (See photo) I got a tube of seam sealer and went around the edge, so we'll see if that helps. Since our bed is in the van, a little water on the edges wasn't a big deal. The thunderstorm blew rain under the fly near the car, but we zipped up that window and all was well. I had sprayed waterproofer around the bottom and on the fly and the connector sleeve, so I'm sure that helped. Just like in our "Cove," water gets in around the open hatch unnoticed and flows around the edge of the opening. It collects in the bottom of the connector sleeve, but (unlike our "Cove") they've installed drain grommets so most of it flows out onto the ground outside the tent. No problem.I wondered how fussy it would be to hook and unhook the thing to the van, but it's a breeze. Granted, our backup camera helps a lot, but you're not docking the space station here: there's a pretty big margin of error and the thing clips on really quickly with a good seal. Bugs didn't find their way in, but they weren't too bad at the time. It takes less than a minute, and it's great to unhook and be off for the day with no fuss. These criticisms (the poles, the stakes, the seams-- are really quibbles. We are very, very happy with this. The quality is really good overall, especially for the price. And the functionality is really great. We refer to it as 'the multi-purpose room.'Update: we found the two staking points on each side of the fly didn't allow for very good ventilation, so I sewed a loop of webbing to the center of the fly and attached a long loop of shock cord. It works a whole lot better, pulling the fly farther from the window allowing good airflow.

My favorite tent ever!

This is my 2nd Napier SUV tent. But the improvements that have been made to are amazing! You used to have to put the rain fly on yo cover the windows. So convenient! It keeps the wind out and allows you to open the windows as much, little as you like! And they've added an inner skirt at the bumper si it's just more asteticaly pleasing. In addition, they've made the pole quides solid, no opening at the top to get through. So much room inside it's amazing! A little expensive as tents go, but if you camp a lot like I do, it's totally worth it. I compliments every time.

Fits a Lifted Jeep JKU, Bottom is Thin and Punctures Easily, No Tub on Bottom to Redirect Water

I got this Backroadz tent to influence my wife to camp with me. She was pleased with the tent as we set it up on our driveway the first time. We then set it up for the first time on a camping trip and came away dissapointed. Read on for our impressions of this first setup and actual use:The Good:-- FITS A LIFTED JEEP: Our Jeep Wrangler JKU has a 2.5" lift and the Backroadz tent fit just fine over the top and around the sides.-- GOOD OPTIONS TO ATTACH TO VEHICLE: The tent comes with adjustable strap option to attach to different vehicles. I especially appreciated the straps with the hooks on the end that allowed me to attached the strap to the fender edges and to pull the flap taught over the Jeep. The flap doesnt seal around the Jeep, there are gaps for bug and such, but if attached correctly will keep water out.-- NICE BIG OPENINGS: The window and door opening are large and with zippered screens as well as a zippered cover for rain or privacy. The opening allowed a good breeze through the tent.-- VERY ROOMY INSIDE: The inside is very roomy. Probably enough room to sleep 4 or more comfortably.-- STANDUP ROOM: Very tall inside. I could easily stand up at 6'2".-- HUGE OPENINGS: The windows and doors and huge providing good views or can just be screened to provide excellent ventilation.-- INSTRUCTIONS ATTACHED: A nice touch is that the instructions are sewn into the carry bag and are on plastic material to survive when wet.To Be Aware Of:-- ONE PERSON SETUP NOT SO EASY: I attempted to setup myself but became concerned I would break the fiberglass poles as they bent to shape so my wife helped by holding up the center where the poles crossed to relieve the bend on the poles. With 2 people it was a easy and fairly fast setup. I think with practice certainly one person could do it.-- A STRUGGLE TO FIT BACK IN CARRY BAG: We didn't think it could be done but were were able to fit everything back into its original carry bag: It was a struggle. The tent is filled with air and as you roll it up you need to allow the air to escape to get a tight roll and still it was a struggle zipping up the bag. I expect the carry bag zipper will not survive long.-- TENT STAKES NOT FOR SAND: The tent stakes provided with the tent are straight heavy wire smooth stakes that will not hold in loose material like sand. The slightest force on the tent will cause them to pull out. For sand another set of more specially screw-in stakes will be an additional purchase.-- VEHICLE ATTACHMENT NO SO USEFUL: After camping we did not think having the tent attached to the vehicle provides much usefulness and would have actually preferred a standalone tent. We didnt like sharing the back end of the jeep in our tent. The Bad:-- THIN BOTTOM: The bottom is a waterproof material shaped and is very thin. I would have no confident it would not puncture easily from rocks and sticks below and from walking on above and we indeed found holes after our camping. Even after using a 17mil heavy duty tarp on the entire bottom and also a large thick blanket on the inside top, we found holes punched through when folding the tent up. See the attached pictures of the holes in the bottom after 1 camping trip.-- NO BOTTOM TUB: The bottom does not forma seamless tub to prevent water from flowing into the tent. The bottom sews to the side as a flat seam. See the attached picture.-- POOR OPTION TO USE WITHOUT VEHICLE: I was surprised when we discovered the there is no option to remove the floppy sections on the vehicle side nor a closable zippered window/screen there. There were also no straps to secure or tie down the loose floppy material so that it does sail and flap even in light wind as its a very large area. We mention this because on our camping trip we found there was no real advantage to attaching to the Jeep and would have preferred a stand alone tent. And while this Backroadz tent can certainly be used standalone, its floppy unsecured flap is not ideal for this.CONCLUSION: If you can live with the issues we though it had, the tent is a good value at $250. The worse issue was the bottom being so delicate and easily punctured. I wish the bottom would have been better designed to prevent punctures and water incursion. That said it seams a good value if you can live with holes in the bottom and dont plan to camp in the rain.

So easy to set up

Our first experience with this tent and we, including both of our grown sons, were impressed! Easy set up, good instructions, get more heavy duty stakes and use the metal ones supplied for ideal weather conditions. We drive a late model Toyota Sequoia (which she is lovingly called “the beast”) and we had our doubts the vehicle side of the tent would get up over the tailgate, but made it! Zippers just fine, air flow, not an issue, held tight to our SUV, but added some magnets along the sides just in case to prevent bugs and rain in.Now for the adaptations I’d make.. awnings covering each window and not just the door by the rain fly which I bet could be adapted to in production; heavy stakes, a bigger bag as once it’s out of the original bundled state, as we all know nothing fits the same twice… we had a large canvas bag and so not a problem. Oh, the long green poles which click together need a little lubricant and I’m going to use Vaseline.
