There Are Dead\heads, Parrotheads...and BLOCKheads?!?
I had a brief stint as a high school teacher back in the late '80s, and while I've blanked out as much of that era as possible, for some reason I have a distinct memory of overhearing to freshman girls talking dismissively about another young lady."She still likes the NEW KIDS!" says the one. "NOOO, you're kidding," answers the other with equal disdain.I'd barely heard of the New Kids myself, but I couldn't help but chuckle. Hipper-than-thou 14 year olds in MY day might have said the same thing about someone who was still listening, say, Herman's Hermits or the Monkees.Decades later, I pick up this collection at a library book sale, just out of curiosity and because it's so cheap. And for a calculated pop music, it's really not bad. Of course, if I'd been 15 in 1987 (instead of in '67), I probably would have been indignant at the very existence of a "manufactured" group like the New Kids. But that is, as they say, show biz. Maurice Starr, the brains behind the operation, was a pretty good songwriter, and his idea of creating a white New Edition, was probably a bit of commercial genius right there. The Kids really were kids for a good deal of their reign. The occasional awkward readings (particularly of the spoken bits, like the leaden opening of "Please Don't Go, Girl") are actually part of the charm, like watching teen actors in a high school musical. But then, they surprise you with some spit and polish moments (often in the same song: just listen closely to "Step by Step," for instance). Jordan Knight's falsetto is particularly impressive, but the vocals are all pretty good. The cover of the Delphonics' "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)?"--while not quite up to the original--is actually an inspired choice, because it lodges the rest of their (or should I say, Maurice Starr's?) oeuvre into the slick, urban soul tradition.Twenty-five years after the fact--at a time when they might be better referred to as "Old Geezers On the Stoop--NKOTB may be something of a footnote in the annals of pop history. I'm sure that, just like the Monkees and Herman's Hermits of my own era, they bring both fans and non-fans of their own day a nostalgic smile and/or a resigned admission that, "Hey, they weren't so bad, after all."

NKOTB are Back
Back nearly what 17 years ago my young daughter from the age 5 up through Elementry School age was such a fan of the New Kids and owned all the products out from pillows, barbies, dolls and sleepingbag of this band , dont get me started on all the posters everwhere. She had the music on for all to hear and their music was not just for the kids, the adults as myself and the other parents really deep down enjoyed too. Now that they are comming back as Men I should say, I sure would love to take in that concert with my daughter. When she grew up she saw Joey McEntire and I believe Jordan Knight in concert. ,The new cd is due out on my birthday September 2, 2008. I will be waiting like most everyone from over the years. The download of the song Summertime is available now. Enjoy New Kids Fans. Thank you.
