Yes, it will fit a 289 in a 65 Mustang. Read the instructions carefully, especially in regards to the correct coil. It doesn’t like typical high performance coils. A stock coil should work fine with this unit

Q: would it fit 318 engine

no problem using the PerTronix unit with a 318 engine. JUst be sure to use the correct ohm coil. The coil is spec'd in the instructions
