Just right.

I had a mi band 6 before this. The touch screen stopped responding after 3 years or so. To be fair, I was wearing it while working with spraying water and sludge, and I am hard on my watch. I am constantly banging it into things. I tried a 30 dollar knockoff smartwatch first as a replacement, but it was too much fuss and irritation. I don't need to dial a phone number on my watch. Really all I was looking for was steps, heart rate, time, and notifications. The mi band 9 handles them all well. The screen is crisp and bright, easy to see in the sun or inside. Swiping on the screen works well. You can select your own shortcuts to swipe left to. Notifications come over very quickly. I have not noticed any extra battery drain. The vibration is perhaps a little lower than I would prefer, but it is enough to wake me up in the morning, which I find much less irritating than the alarm on my phone. I would definitely recommend it. The only thing to see is if the new screen holds up as well as the old one, but there are screen protectors if needed.

Has auto activity detection, easier to use than previous gen

I have a xiaomi band 4 but the battery went out fast. This gen 9 has better battery than previous one. Now it can automatically detect your activity, I don't need to set my current activity manually.

A step backward since previous generations, but still a well-designed full-featured option.

For full disclosure, I am comparing this product to the Xiaomi Smart Band 5, which I bought and used for about 4 years. I've kept up to date with the various advancements in the smart band line over the intervening years, and there's really been nothing to make me want to upgrade, and the Smart Band 5 kept on going all that time. I primarily use the Smart Bands as watches (obviously), step trackers, and heart rate monitoring during my runs. The feature that finally pushed me to get the Smart Band 9 was the adaptive display brightness, which is a first in this line. When I'm running with the band 5, it is typically too bright to read the display, so I can't easily set my cadence. The Smart Band 9 definitely works in this regard, however there are several areas where the performance has regressed versus the 5, at least for my use case.Step tracking: The Smart Band 9 records, on average, about 30-40% fewer steps than the Smart Band 5. It doesn't seem to register short sequences of steps, or steps when I'm not moving my arms as much. Comparing to step tracking on my phone, I'd estimate that the Smart Band 5 tracked about 15% more than Google Fit alone, and the SmartBand 9 consistently tracks about 15% fewer steps than Google Fit alone. And since my employer health plan rewards step tracking, this means I need to work harder for the same reward.App: The Smart band 9 uses Mi Fitness as its Android Application. This is a pretty good app. You can define which applications on your phone can send notifications to the Smart Band, and set up a Do Not Disturb schedule, and alarms, and everything else you might reasonably expect. There is one confusing feature that I had to turn off, called DND Sync, which is supposed to synchronize Do Not Disturb with your phone. I found that it just turned DND on my phone on, even when the band was out of DND mode, and that I had to manually turn it off on my phone. I'm not sure of the intended use case here. Calorie tracking is weird. It definitely doesn't calculate full passive calories (~2000 per day), but doesn't seem to full calculate active calories right either. It consistently records in the region of 700-900 calories for me, more or less regardless of activity level. For a time, Mi Fitness didn't integrate with Google Fit. Thankfully, that has now been resolved, so steps and activities sync from Mi Fitness to Google Fit pretty seamlessly. I was used to using the Zepp Life app with the older Smart Band, and this had several stand-out features that are missing from Mi Fitness. With Zepp Life, I could export my workouts in GPX format, so I could use different apps (Strava, etc.) to track and share. This is not possible with Mi Fitness (from my research it may have been possible once, but they removed the feature). So in order to use the heart rate monitor feature, but also share my runs, I have to track my runs using the Smart Band as well as an app on my phone. Secondly, I used to be able to share the HRM data directly from the band with my phone over Bluetooth (I assume), so my running app could directly access the heart rate data from the Band. As far as I can see, that feature disappeared. So now I need to wear a heart rate chest strap for my running app, as well as having the live heart rate data from the band on my wrist. Again, nothing drastic, but a definite step backward over four years of development. The quality of the band itself is very good. I get this thing wet at least daily, and it hasn't objected once. I use it with HR turned off except when I run, to maximize battery life. It's life isn't as good as the Smart Band 5, probably 2-3 weeks. A nice feature is that, as soon as I start a fitness activity on the band, the heart rate starts tracking. I use a third party strap, and these tend to fall off if I hit the device at just the wrong angle. The original strap has a metal latch part that probably alleviates this, but I'm not a huge fan of the feel of silicone on my skin. I've stuck with the default screen, which provides enough info, without being overwhelming. The device itself is understated in appearance, and doesn't draw much attention. So overall, compared to the version I was used to, I'd give it 3 stars because of the annoyances I've outlined. Compared to other trackers in this price range, though, it's a well-featured, minimalist-designed, watch that does most of what you'd want without excessive complexity, so I'll give it four total.
